I've been wondering the cause of the international incident and whats the reason behind it and narrowed it down to 3 likely possibilities.

1. An Unidentified Antagonist - Someone the likes of Fontaine who either built or took over Columbia after its launch to fulfill their own political ambitions / personal goals. Reasons for - Irrational has used this before in the first Bioshock , the xenophobia and propaganda would be explained, and someone/something is commanding the robot holding Elizabeth.

2. A parasite/Infection - Some sort of parasite or infection invaded and corrupted people on Columbia. Like adam twisted its users, a parasite would explain the mayhem on board Columbia. I think of the woman sweeping in front of her store while its on fire, someone in their right mind wouldn't be doing that so what is affecting her.

3. Elizabeth - Elizabeth might be the source of all the problems. She has powers and has been held prisoner for 15 years, what is the reason? She might be a source of power/disaster for both Columbia and is inhabitants. You do not play as Elizabeth that has been clearly stated. Morality is going to figure somehow in this game, what better way than to have to decide at the end whether to save or kill the person you were sent to rescue and through the game have become attached too.

Those are some of my ideas, I'm betting its a combination of all 3!! Anyone have any other ideas?

Yeah, maybe the inhabitants of Columbia got completely burnt out on patriotism. Maybe they were brainwashed to become so patriotic, and they 're so sucked into that zone that they can't escape. Like the woman sweeping in front of her burning business...she doesn't care because she's proud of her establishment, regardless of its fate of becoming a pile of ashes.

I can't really think of any reasons why it's crashing down...perhaps some rebelling has taken place...while others don't take part in the rioting.

I have absolutely no idea, haha.

After reading some of the EGMNOW article on Bioshock Infinite, Saltonstall has potential to be the main antagonist.

Something tells me it starts by a phrase "LAUNCH PROJECT ICARUS", and then pressing a large red button.

Haha. I think I saw somewhere that Elizabeth is "at the core" of Columbia's problems. I'd say that points to Elizabeth causing the problem somehow, but with Irrational, who knows?

I'd guess that Elizabeth is in her late teens/early 20's, though, so a little toddler causing such great problems is a bit of an odd idea. Unless she accidentally pressed the big red button.

I would think that it'd be more politically or socially natured. The game screams out nationalism/patriotism. I would bet that it's related to who can be part of the Columbia society given that there are a few bits in the trailer that show ads of rejecting certain people(I'm talking about the ad that says: Burden not Columbia with your CHAFF")

Perhaps humans from land are being brought into the city from different countries or something. If this game carries any resemblance to the original Bioshock, then one must consider that Rapture didn't just let anyone into the city and that Columbia could possibly be similar in that.

So somebody important said this sky city is like the 'Death Star'. Well if the city is like that than...

What really happened was the government funded creating a super weapon in the disguise of a traveling city.

This thing is like the MinuteMen / B-2 bombers / Star Wars kill sats but more realistic.

Because how do you defend against a floating fortress in those days?

When did they build anti-aircraft guns? So no defense = perfect opportunity to build a Death Star disguised as a peaceful science project.

Only after they built aircraft capable of doing more than just imitating a grashopper!
