View Full Version : The Melee Weapon

We all know and love the iconic wrench from Bioshock.

Bioshock 2's drill: uh . . . iconic yes, but I don't think quite as loved as the wrench.

What should be the next loved and iconic melee weapon of Bioshock: Infinite?

SHODANFreeman

I vote wrench. It's a tradition.

iglegacy_skizzo321

Well, the wrench was used in both System Shock 2 and Bioshock, but the lead pipe from the first System Shock didn't get a repeat performance. So I might say lead pipe...

...However Booker is coming to Columbia not on accident, but with a purpose to rescue Elizabeth, who we know was kidnapped. So Booker should be carrying something a bit more purposeful going into a possible violent situation than picking up a spur-of-the-moment melee weapon.

So something a bit turn of the century, a truncheon perhaps. But I would want something either concealable or non-threatening in broad sight...a cane/umbrella/walking stick.

Why one of these? Well it just so happens that a book called "The Cane as a Weapon" was published in America and in the same year as when the game is supposed to take place. Here's a pdf of the book:

I'd say go up there with a knife or something, but be able to swap it out for something either stabbier (machete) or bluntier (bat).

Unless the player starts in a room where a wrench is in a reasonable usable room then yes I vote wrench.

By the way I was thinking they could do some sorta hand to hand combat.

That would be more of like a cop.

That's why I think he would have more of a spur-of-the-moment weapon. Detectives wouldn't be quite as obvious as police officers.

Or if it was a hooked cane, it could be good for grabbing enemies for a closer melee kill.

Rifle butt or pistol whip would work for me, though a nightstick sounds fitting with the time period.

How about a Sabre?

The Cavalry still used them up until 1918. i'm thinking Booker could take one from an officer of some kind, one who carries a ceremonial sabre as part of his uniform.

Also that kinda makes me curious if there will be any military force (maybe navy?) on Columbia.

That's an interesting topic. I'm guessing the Big Daddy-like characters are kind of the "police" and "force" that they'll be using, but if they're used for something else...I too am curious of what they would use up there.

I like the melee with everything but it should be a l4d2 style. Were Meleeing with your gun just shoves them back. While the melee weapon does more damage.

A crowbar brilliant, now If only a game will come out where you can use one. Better yet how about an episode three for it.

Honestly I'd rather it go the way of Bioshock 2, and just use whatever weapon you are holding as a melee.

And to be even MORE honest, I did not care for the wrench in Bioshock 1. Not the most intuitive melee configuration. But if I had to vote for 1 melee weapon, I'd have to go with baseball bat with jutting nails.

Or maybe just brass knuckles?

Damage Increase Upgrade: Sharpened diamond studs are affixed to the rings, rips through any lesser stone or metal.

Prolonged Damage Upgrade: Poisonous venom infused in diamond studs are injected into enemies when hit, causing a slow but constant drain on health.

Final Upgrade: Conductors at the base of the knuckles allow you to charge your punch with any elemental power you have equipped.

The hook you use to get around columbia (the latest egmnow says you will have one) will probably double up as a melee weapon.

AdjundantReflex
08-20-2010, 11:46 PM
I guess it depends on Booker's entrance - if his trip to Columbia goes as planned, a combat-oriented melee weapon (knife, cane, etc.) would make sense. HOWEVER, if his entrance to Columbia goes awry, well, then, he might have to make use of a more impromptu weapon.

I gotta say, a cane / umbrella doesn’t sound particularly fitting to Booker. He’s a an ex Pinkerton agent remember, which I don’t really picture as a upper class gentleman of the period. He sounds like a guy who gets things done, and not always in the most gentlemanly manor. He is probably someone who would be armed with a pistol from the beginning.

Of course as virgil mentioned it really depends on his entrance onto Columbia. But I think if there is a melee weapon, it will be acquired from the city.

Felonious mentioned the grapple hook thingy, I can definitely see that device as filling some dual purpose (last resort) sort of melee weapon.

But actually I think it would be cool to see many of the melee weapons mentioned in this thread. Rather than just one, why not have a choice about what type we want to take?

In fact why not have a choice about all the weapons we want to take?

It worked in BioShock having unlimited carrying capacity, but I actually prefared the inventory mechanic in System Shock 2, in which you had to make choices about what you take and what you don’t.

Seriously though what's wrong with a golf club. I mean it's classy and it's a strong iconic reference to the first bioshock although maybe used indirectly . (besides what could be more fulfilling when you saw the damage it can do!?
