music is what made Rapture feel like the 40's-50's. And so, it is an important element of the game.


What kind of music do you guys think we can expect from Columbia?

I learned waltzes, early jazz (Rag-time), Opera's and indeed Classical was the music that was played during the 1900's.

i don't really think sound is going to be as important in this one!


In Rapture the sound helped you know it was in the 50's, because the visuals weren't as prominent.

but in this game it really LOOKS like 1912...

...not as important perhaps, but definately adds to the feel and element of gameplay.

How old are you?

No splicers. Read the wiki. Everyone doesn't say it's going to be in the 1900, it's been confirmed to be in 1912.

Dixieland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixieland ('http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixieland')) style jazz was starting to get big at the time. It would be neat to have some King Oliver in there, though if Columbia's policies are going to be as exclusionary as they appear to be, there may not be any Dixie. That makes me a little sad. :(

Agreed there. You can't go wrong with G-Krizzle. Although in Bioshock 2 it was a tid bit dry.

I would agree with this.


I also think that what we'll be hearing will be all military-style, military-band music, that sort of thing. The music industry didn't exist at this point - this is pre-pop culture - and people listened to 'local' music in the most essential meaning of the word. For a city like this, military music seems like the only real choice - though we may get lucky and hear some people singing "The Internationale"

Hmm, Just as in rapture, people don't always listen to their superiors. So they easily could have brought records with their favorite Dixyland bands on them.


And indeed, the music industry was just starting up at that point in time, but it did exist.

Only I think records and such where only for those who could affort it.

Btw, I find it easiest to find hits from certain years by going to Wikipedia.org and typing "[insert year here] in music"

I always felt that Bioshock Infinite would do well with some construction worker dad power rock.

Obviously early 1800s-1900s patriotic music is going to dominate this soundtrack unfortunately.

There will definitely be some patriotic music, but I don't think it'll be dominant over all the other music.

Haha, indeed. I was really trying to think of the worst possible example and see if anyone went with it normally.

I'm not really into Dad rock (excluding Springsteen), but I always think it's funny to bring up.

Yeah, that stuff can be really bizarre - when Springsteen played on the Vote for Change tour in 2004, my girlfriend at the time's father (who epitomizes the blue-collar worker ☺☺☺☺ed over by a ☺☺☺☺ty economic system) said something to her like: "Yeah, I used to like some of Springsteen's tunes, but I don't listen to him anymore because he's a communist."


So depressing, especially since Kerry is/was about as conservative as Bush.

Would be good to get a bit of honkytonk in some of the bars around the city. But yeah, I think there's going to be a lot of marching band and brassy, romantic orchestral numbers in terms of what the music the citizens play and listen to. As for the score, I think there'll be a lot less use of violin than there was in Rapture; that just wouldn't lend itself well to the atmosphere of the place.

Hearing Antonin Dvorak's Symphony from the New World ('http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtE3P8Z15Pk') in the context of Columbia would be a treat, as it was composed during Dvorak's visit to the States (around the 1890's). And throw in some Mahler and Debussy while you're at it, Irrational, will ya?

Based off the music in the trailer, it seems very likely that Schyman will do the score for Infinite as well. :)
