View Full Version : Is this a new franchise?

There were several articles that stated that Ken Levine was working on an all new franchise, which would have weeded out possibilities like an Irrational XCOM or the like....one had assumed it also weeded out BioShock.

Is it possible that BioShock Infinite is the start of a new franchise in that there will be multiple titles which take place within the city? Would Irrational maintain control of the titles or will they pull an Abrams and start the awesomeness and let someone else finish while they work on something new?

I guess what I want to know is this: Should this title be read as part of the BioShock universe or as something different? Will there be more Rapture or is Rapture done for and now we are onto Columbia?

Is this the end of Mr. Bubbles? (I hope not)

This game looks amazing! I cannot wait to play it. Sorry for the rambling nature of this post. :)

Well for all intents and purposes, BioShock Infinite sounds like a spiritual successor to BioShock. Ken has said that to him the name BioShock is an ideal, it's a type of game that has a specific kind of gameplay and narrative elements, but it doesn't necessarily mean it will have the same story. I find it very unlikely that the story of Columbia will tie into the story of Rapture in any way.

That being said, I do hope that 2K Marin comes back and finishes the story of Rapture with BioShock 3. I thought Bio 2 was great and I'd like to see a grand conclusions to that story.

Enh, I dunno. It's not like BioShock 2 was The Empire Strikes Back. It's not like there was a cliffhanger, or some grand plan for a trilogy (despite the idiotic remarks that were made by a certain 2K executive... was it the president?). Why is it that everything has to be a trilogy these days? Both BioShock games are more or less stand-alone. Sure, knowing stuff from 1 helps you play 2, but I don't think that's totally necessary, and they're certainly not linked via the dramatic structure of a trilogy. 2K should quit while they're ahead with BioShock in the world of Rapture.

Bring on the infinite!

(Still really wanting to know what "Infinite" means in terms of this game and the way it's used in the title!)

I'm curious as to where this will go as well. It's so peculiar that they kept the Bioshock name (I don't think its a bad thing mind you) that everyone seems to be reeling from it and specualtion is all over the place.

I think it'd be interesting if they kept their core principles of game design and made Bioshock into a sort of sub-genre of FPS all its own while each consecutive game expands the limits of the last...telling new amazing stories while staying true to their "golden rules".

"oh its a Bioshock-style game...cool."

A new IP would be cool too.

I disagree. True, the two games had different stories and different characters, but I've always felt that BioShock was, at its heart, the story of Rapture and that story is not completed. Once again there is a power vacuum in Rapture and something will have to fill that. I want to see one more game to wrap up the story of Rapture, and I don't want it because I think the series has to be a trilogy, but because I think that Rapture still has more stories to tell. BioShock 2 had a great ending, but it didn't conclude the story of Rapture.

All that being said, I think that Infinite will be a great thing for the franchise. It presents the BioShock style in a whole new light (literally) and looks to be a fantastic game. We'll have two years to soak up the setting of Columbia, then, if and when 2K decides to finish Rapture's story it will feel like coming home.

Employees of Irrational have stated that they are treating the game as a new IP. So It is Bioshock, but at the same time, it isn't.

Yes this is what I thought.... I hope Rapture isn't over my trepidation there does not in any way lessen my excitement for this game. :)

I look at the new game as part of a series, maybe similar to final fantasy. Similar themes and gameplay, but different settings and details. I for one can't wait for this game. I know it will be excellent and a day one purchase.
