If you don't build a huge freakin army right away and sacrifice everything else, your neighbors will see you as weak and whomp on you.

What do you mean by huge army? A few well-placed units should serve you well. At that difficulty you should be able to wipe out any early invasion with two warriors fortified in rough terrain and a couple of archers. Then once the AI is drained of units, they'll start gifting you cities. You should be thankful every time the AI foolishly tries to attack you.
Try Immortal or Deity with 10,000 Mohawk warriors descending on you in 1200 BC.
