So how many players can be in one game? I am in two games atm, one has 186 players, the other has 176 players, and my friend can't join either game when I invite him. According to the wiki, the only reason a friend wouldn't be able to join a game through an invite is if that game already had the max number of players. Why is that max number of players apparently different for different games?

Does your friend have a game free? He won't be able to join if he doesn't have an open slot.

From what I've seen, the maximum is 200. Based purely on that being the largest number I've seen in a game, and it sounds a round figure for it.

We tried this during the recent brief period of time when there was a "quit" option. He quit the game he was in and, after doing that, tried to accept my invites. No luck.

Dunno, but the max players per civ thing is getting on me as well... we had 12 players in our civ last game and it said max players, and our enemy had 22 players and it said max... We had to work extra hard to even compete with them because we had basically half as many players... they were winning gold era vic's left and right because 22X gold production vs 12X gold production equals them having WAY more gold... same with science, production, and everything else... we did meritocracy to get rid of people at one point when we were more than 12, to try and fill the couple of slots we had filled with dead weight, and instead of getting slots, we ended up with 12 as our NEW max players... even the dead weight was better because they at least never spent anything so we were constantly getting better on gold reserves...
