View Full Version : [BUG] New people cannot join our civilization

In game 785, we had about 25+ players at the beginning in one civilization (the game was buggy at the time before patches were made).

We managed to enact meritocracy to kick all the inactives out and also made voting more effective. However, we have now less than 10 players in the civilization, and it still shows that we are at the maximum capacity. Other civilizations have over 10 players (Namely, the French and the British in this game).

From what I read in the CivWorld Wiki:


Maximum Civilization size = 20% of the total players in the game, but never less than ten.

And since we have 196 players total, that should range from 10 - 39 people within a civilization, meaning that we should have vacancies.

I also want to emphasize that we have NEVER enacted the Closed Borders civic (which prevents new players from joining).

Yeah, if your civ had that joining bug, it will always be "full". In my game the "full" civ got down to 3 players.

More than just this bug.

Since the number of players fluctuates (it usually goes up, reaches a max, and then players drop off as the game ages), the dynamically calculated max provides a great chance for one civ to have max players well over twice as large as the max any other civ has.

The current game I'm player, our civ is maxed at 12 players, but another civ is maxed at 24.

This rule:

Maximum Civilization size = 20% of the total players in the game, but never less than ten.

Should be changed to:

Maximum Civilization size = 20% of the maximum total players the game has had, but never less than ten.

This would allow consistent maxes between civs even when total players fluctuates.

Not to say that it's not buggy, because it is, but when wiki says "20% of the total players in the game" - that's players who are in all civilizations. Independents are not included. And it's highly unlikely you have 196 players excluding independents.
I suppose the max size is simply calculated as 20%all, not max(10; 20%all) as it's supposed to be.

This also affects the era victories, as there is now only one 15 player civ (at max players) in our game, the next biggest is 11 (also at max players) which makes it a little difficult to win an era victory against a 20 player Civ.
