Hello all, I've browsed some of the threads in this forum (but not all), and havnt seen anything yet that related to one of the issues I'm having - so, I decided to post.

First off, I'm having difficulty actually running the game at all. There are absolutely no graphical errors, slows or glitches of any kind while in game, and everything seems to be working fine, but sooner or later after 5-15 minutes of play time the game will just completely freeze up, crash and force me to quit to desktop. I have tried several installations and just about every combination of graphical settings to no avail. I've been completely unable to start a match running the game with DX9, while selecting the DX10/11 option allows me to at least build a city and flop around for a few turns before crashing.

Some of my specs are the following, if anyone has any suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it. And, just for the record, I have not had any difficulties running any games, new or old, in the recent months. This issue with crashing seems unique to the Civ 5 program.

Vista (sigh) 32 bit and fully upgraded / packed, etc.
Processor: Q6600 / Quad Core @ 2.4 GHZ
Memory: 4 Gigs
Vid Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS

Additionally, I think I've noticed that certain game settings have a direct effect on how long I am actually able to play. For example, I've noticed that selecting the map type of 'Earth' seems to lead the game to crash almost immediately upon loading in, while randomly generating continents seems to result in a few turns of actually being able to play. Adjusting the amount of other players and city-states does not seem to have any effect on how long the game lasts, and does not improve or hinder performance in any way.

Lastly, in several of my play sessions (including my longest) I've been encountering city-states that do not in fact build any sort of a city. It seems that, particularly on the 'earth' map type, that city-states begin with settlers and then proceed to just run around in a panic until someone decides they want to capture a free unit. They never establish the capital, they never have any borders, and thus never offer any sort of relations or missions of any sort. What the hell?

Before anything, i will say the 8800 is possibly the issue.

I am having this exact same problem... I decided to give the game another go after several patches and new civs and suddenly it just starts freezing a problem I've never had before. The game runs fine, in fact, the game runs better than it ever has before except for the random freezing which is making the game unplayable because I spend almost as much time reloading this damn game than I do playing it now.
I am running on the following:

Windows 7 64 Bit
AMD Phenom II X4 925 2.8 Ghz Processor
Nvidia GeForce gtx 260 1792 MB Video Card
6GB DDR3 Memory

I might assume it was the card too except he and I are having the same problem and I know my card more than meets the minimum requirements.

Sorry I was just kinda bumping it in case this got forgotten or the like.

Umm with me, I don't know about the other guy, I play the game on either DX9 or DX10/11 and the game runs smoothly and normally as I play. The freezing literally seems to happen at random. Sometimes 5 minutes into play, sometimes 30 minutes into play.

I was using the Fire Tuner for fun in the first few games that froze up. Rather than reloading I made a new one, and did so again. However by the third or fourth time I decided to try running a normal game without the tuner and without mods. That game froze too by turn 60-80 something?

The only trend I am noticing is that most of the time the freezing occurs while the computer is taking it's turn, though I think once or twice it has occurred while I was moving a unit. I've also noticed that in SOME instances the Freeze happens within a few turns no matter what(For example if I had a freeze at turn 84, and I reload the game at turn 70, about a third of the time the game will freeze again at around turn 84) Most of the time though it doesn't, just sometimes. The freeze isn't a typical freeze since I can move my mouse around and I believe the music keeps playing too but all game play stops, I can't alt tab out, and the only thing I can do is wait for the game to shut itself down or force shut it down.

To play again I just have to shut it down and open it again. However that is a pain in the ass because the game is so demanding on my system. Which is another thing I don't understand. I more than meet the system specs for the game but I've had to turn everything down to low settings and don't play the intro movie(Mostly cause I have trouble skipping it). Whatever the case it takes me about 2-3 minutes to get back into the loading screen and about 3-5 minutes to load up the game. Which means I play for about 5-30 minutes and spend about 5-8 minutes loading back up.
