Hi, just a pair of suggestions to polish a bit more the game:
A: The Helicopters shouldn't embark! Just fly over the sea
B: Once you enter the modern era you shouldn't be able to build Coliseums, the Stadium should be the natural replacement
Regards!

As we're talking realism here, how would the helicopter refuel if it just stays out at sea?
Allowing some form of flight over water would be interesting but should be restricted if so.
B in particular is a case a realism over gameplay.i.e. being more realistic would make the game play worse.

Civ II allowed helicopters to fly over water, but they took damage for every turn that they weren't in a city or an airbase/carrier.

Hi,
About A: It could have a limited number of moves over the sea for example.
About B: it's a simple one, just once you get the mass media the Colosseum build option shouldn't appear anymore to be build, the obsolete concept exists in the game.

I could go for helicopters being allowed over coast and lake types, as they aren't far from land (so could just about represent patrolling that area from base on land).

Yes, but the gameplay concept is of a tiered sequence of buildings; you have to have something at the root of it. If it helps, imagine that the modern-era-existing colloseums represent minor sporting franchises, and the stadiums represent major ones.

Maybe you're right about the gameplay, but we should agree at least that is a kind of building that since hundreds of years nobody builds, it's weird already in the industrial era that you can build a colosseum.

A - that is similar to an idea i had off the top of my head, as to how good it would be game play wise i will not comment.
Edit:

This would be much better

B - The biggest issue i see is with game balance. Either a) once stadiums are available then Colosseum's become totally obsolete and thus no longer provide happiness which would cause another issue all together.e.g. once you learnt mass media you would just get a huge unhappiness bomb that would explode as Colosseum's went obsolete. Or b) you allow Colosseum's to keep their happiness but simply no longer be able to be built which would greatly effect the balance of the game and effectively cripple any city which did not have a Colosseum by the time you learnt mass media as it would always be an extra burden on your empire simply be being built/captured later in the game.

This is where the fact it is a game is shown and not reality. It is simply a representation of reality at best and a case where game play or playability of the game has taken precedent over reality because if it hadn't the game would be worse for mimicking reality.
I am sure many of us would love the game to be as real as possible but in the end it is not reality and sometimes making things too real is not the best option for a game.
Look at games where your character dies for example, it would be more realistic to die and it be game over and then never be able to play that game again but it doesn't make for a fun gaming experience.

B - I guess that if the Colosseums upgrades to Stadiums automatically and instead of 3 happiness you obtain 6 for example (just guessing) it should do the trick. I find the game very good and polish at the beggining but I find it unfinished or raw from modern era comparing it to the other eras.

I will admit one other possibility based on Furball's - Colosseums stop being buildable with Mass Media, but every city in the civ gets the matching bonus and counts as having one for the purposes of building prereqs (Theatre, isn't it, depends on Colosseum?). This could work, and accurately reflect the effects of having mass media.

I should mention, though, that ancient types of building still being live and current into the modern age is very much consistent with how Civ works. The better solution to the cognitive dissonance you're experiencing might be renaming the colloseum to 'arena', for instance. Nothing wrong with 'arenas' in modern age.

This would be a good idea. For any existing Colosseum's they should stay as they are though but any new ones built would be called arena's.

Civ V has done away with anything becoming obsolete (much better from a gameplay standpoint)... but it would be interesting if, say, at Mass Media, the colisseum went from producing happiness to producing culture. Thus, it becomes a landmark like the one in Rome (which I'm assuming is no longer functional...beats me). Also, you are no longer able to build it. Any happiness previously gained from the colisseums would be nullified, but maybe the stadium could be buffed to add more happiness. Plus, this would be more incentive to build them (because I pretty much never do...)

That's another option, anyway it's obvious that in the current form the colosseums aren't right in the game.

Change them with cyber cafes, futsall, stadiums, disney land (fun park), red light districts...hmmm...
