View Full Version : Desert, tundra, snow removal?

Hi all,
I was just wondering if there is a mod that removes, or severely limits the tiles, Tundra, Snow, and desert. As it is now, I always end up with 20-30% of my map being tundra, or snow, or desert. All of which are basically useless tiles.

I'm looking for a mod that will either severely limit these types of useless tiles or eliminate them entirely.

Thanks.

You could mod them to be less useless - have them actually yield stuff.

I wouldn't know where to begin. I used to mod older versions of Civ, but this new version has me baffled. I took a stab at it a while ago, but had no luck. The only way I can get any of my mods to work, is to actually change the original file and back up the old.

The MAIN reason I don't want to do this; I would probably mess up the game balance and end up causing more of a headache than I already have.. :) Plus, I would be messing around in more of the main game files, due to my lack of understanding how this modbuddy stuff works.

If you want something simple (say, tundra to have plains yield, desert and ice to have tundra yield) then that's easy. If I get time in the next few days, I could do that. If you want something a bit deeper (say, being able to build more improvements on tundra and ice), that's a bit more and I guess I could do it.

Don't forget that tundra is balanced a bit, however, by the presence of extra game in those areas. Deserts similarly get flood plains and oases, and extra wheat. It would, however, be possible using Lua modding, to alter the map scripts (or possibly create new ones) that don't create those at all (or reduces them to some extent). However, I've never seen the levels of incidence you're describing.

Thanks so much Sam,

I just get frustrated because, right now I'm stuck using Standard size maps. (Until 2k or whoever, gets the hot-fix out to fix the crashing problems, scheduled for some time this month.)

When ever I create a map with temperate climate, and normal rainfall and such, the top and bottom of the map (about 10-15%) is snow, and the middle 5-10% is dominated with desert. That's a huge amount of the map on standard size.

(I can actually live with tundra, its the snow and desert that truly annoy me.)

The Ice is just annoying, I don't mind it as an option, but mandatory is just wrong. lol

Thanks for the offer of making this work for me, I really appreciate it.

Maybe, the desert areas aren't so bad in actual Civ 5 game play. I'm just so used to avoiding them from other versions.
(I know ice is just water, I just hate it. lol) I do have a mod that does allow me to move ships through the Ice. It just bothers me that there is no option to just remove this stuff.

A "No polar region" option, and/or "smaller deserts" would be a nice set of options in map creation. (Like "no barbarians" and the like.)

Personally, I would like to see a mod that makes it so workers can terraform tiles. But right now, I think it is based off a feature removal system, so you can remove a marsh from a grassland, but you can't change a grassland into a hill.

Waiting people to get their hands on the dll.

Ditto!
Deserts should maybe cause slower growth in cities placed in them in the beginning but, modern techs could/should off-set that by allowing some sort of irrigation. Making them more profitable in future eras. I mean, lets face it, sometimes you HAVE to build there just to create some sort of culture bridge, to keep the other nations from settling in the middle of your own, or other various reasons. So it would be nice to update the terrain through some sort of tech.
Tundra and snow, would be difficult in reality to "terraform", due to the fact that, it isn't even possible with today's techs, and/or any tech in the foreseeable future.
